    Default lass~1.exe / Norton AV / and constant pop-ups.........

    Hiya All,

Long time reader, first time poster. How is everyone?

I seem to be having problemwith this darnLASS~1.EXE and some pop-ups and Norton. Norton finds that it has ADAWARE in it, but can't delete it. I have tried a few things to no avail. I am hoping someone can steer me in the right direction please.

I am also getting continuous errors from IE (namely says script error do you want to run error report) so not sure if these 2 things are related as I have pop-up blockers running.

Also, Norton hase detected chkntfs.exe which it cannot remove either.

My HJT log is below. Anything else I need, let me know.

    Default added info

Hiya, sorry couldn't find the EDIT button.

This is similar to the IE errors I keep getting

An error has occured in the script on this page.

    Line: 11
    Char: 1
    Error: Object expected
    Code: 0
    URL: file//Cocuments and Settings\...\Local Settings\Temp\NDr5B0.tmp.html

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
I click no and the page continues. Sometimes I can have the exact same browser window open without doing anything and then 5 mins later, it pops up again!!!!!!!!!!!

There isn't an option to edit in the Spyware Help forum. The MODS removed it a while back. Someone should be along soon to analyze your log & give some directions how to proceed to clean your comuter. Please be patient.

Disconnect from the internet, close all browser windows including this one. Check the following files in the HJT program to fix:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {8565AD25-6CEF-326F-B38B-6753E2853894} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxlzcpiz.dll (file missing)

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8565AD25-6CEF-326F-B38B-6753E2853894} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxlzcpiz.dll (file missing)

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Chcki] C:\PROGRA~1\DOBE~1\LASS~1.EXE

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Hrwa] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SMANTE~1\chkntfs.exe" -vt ndrv

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: rundll.dll

Press the fixed check button. Re boot the PC

Find and delete the following, if found:

    C:\PROGRA~1\DOBE~1...Folder
(Be careful -don't delete the C:\Program Files\Adobe, which is a legitimate file. Can't give the exact name of the folder only the first 6 letters)

    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SMANTE~1\chkntfs.exe...file
(can only give the first six letter of the name)

Re boot the PC and post a new HJT log.

    Default Thanks Basementgeek

    Hiya,

I have followed your instructions and this is what I got.

When I ran "fixed check" button, this error came up

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: rundll.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
    * What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
    * How you can reproduce the error
    * A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

    Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
    MSIE version: 6.0.2900.2180
    HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

Carried on anyway and re-booted. Couldn't find the DOBE~1 folder nor the CHKNTFS.EXE in that folder, however I did find the CHKNTFS.EXE in a pre-fetch folder and in the systems 32 folder. Deleted these anyway (just the file)

Here is my new HJT log

Go to your Start button>All Programs>Accessories> System Tools>System Restore. Check the "Create a restore point">Next.
Give it a name like before HJT fix>Create. Follow the rest of the directions.

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Re boot the PC in the safe mode by tapping F8 during start up. Select safe mode.

    Back to the start button>Search

    Enter/cut and paste

    C:\PROGRA~1\DOBE~1 delete if found

    Now go to your :

c:\windows\system32 files and delete the rundll.dll ...file, if found.

Re boot the PC in the normal mode and post another log.

As far as the file found in the Prefetch files, no problems. All prefetch files can be safely delete, just make sure that your do not delete the Prefetch folder.

    Hi

Prefetch file are not really files... just information for windows to use when it boots... delete or not, doesn't make any difference...

    These are definately there :-

    C:\PROGRA~1\DOBE~1\LASS~1.EXE

    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SMANTE~1\chkntfs.exe

This one DOBE~1 may in fact be called ADOBE ... AS Basementgeek says be carefull what you delete ... there is a legitimate Adobe folder in the same location...

You wont be able to delete this one in normal mode, DOBE~1 because LASS~1.EXE is running ...

    Boot to Safemode...

    look for this :-

    C:\PROGRAM FILES\DOBE~1 .. folder

Look in every folder if you have to, untill you find the one with LASS~1.EXE in it .... then delete the folder

    then look for this :-

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\SMANTE~1 again Look in every folder if you have to, untill you find the one with chkntfs.exe in it .... then delete the folder

Then run hijackthis and fix this entry :-

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Chcki] C:\PROGRA~1\DOBE~1\LASS~1.EXE

    Boot back to normal mode...

In IE click > TOOLS (in the menu at the top) > internet options > advanced >

    Tick - disable script debugging

Un-Tick - Display a notification about every script error

    Default possibly...........

    Hiya Guys,

Thanks for the 2 solutions. I have used them both and been able to find and delete the 2 files in safe mode.

Basementgeek - I wasn't able to delete the rundll.dll file in safe mode, it says it is in use or denied.

Here is my new HJT log, but the 2 files still show upo in this?????
