    Default ActiveScan Hangs on ...\bits\qmgr.dll

    Hi,

My problems started w/ the first issue but as of now the second issue is preventing me from trying to fix the first.

    1. The original problem that brings me to this forum is: From my home desk top PC, I cannot log onto secure web site (gmail, nytimes...) that require my user name & pswd.
    - I can log onto these sites at home from my laptop.
    - My girlfriend can log onto her secure web sites from her laptop.
    - A house guest could not log on to her secure web sites from her laptop
At home we all use Windows PCs connected to a Linksys wifi router.

    2. Given the above I tried to follow the instructions on steamwiz's 09/17/04 post: "Get Rid of Spyware, Adware, and Web Browser Hijacker". Although I've tried multiple times I cannot get far at all.
    - ActiveScan hangs at windows\system32\bits\qmgr.dll. Before it hanged the first time I had 541 Spyware items & 2 Hacking tools.
    - I cannot get Windows updates and receive the error msg: "Website has encountered a problem..." 0x80072EE2. Following the instructions for that error code fail.
    - Spybot did seem to work
    - Ad-Aware SE Personal web site just spins
    - AVG also got stuck on ...bits\qmgr.dll and locked up my PC. I had to use the PC's reset button.
    - Norton is what I usually use and it shows no viruses.
    - I worked thru the Spyware Guide again and the Help2Go Detective.
    - I can send the HijackThis log file now or I can rerun something first.

The above description is not as logical or clear as I had hoped; however, after three days of trial and error I thought it best to ask the experts. Appreciate any help.

    TIA,

    Tony

    Default

I will get you started on this.

The c:\windows\system32\bits\qmgr.dll problem is what may be causing the problem with windows updates.

First thing you must do, is to delete one of the anti virus programs.

Next....Run another HJT scan. Disconnect from the internet, close all browser windows including this one. Check the following files to have HJT fix:

    O1 - Hosts: 209.66.114.130 sitefinder.verisign.com

    O23 - Service: mserv.exe (anem) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\mserv.exe (file missing)

(Also recommend that all the 015 also be check, there is no need for them to be unless that is the only way you can access those sites)

Press the fixed check button. Close the HJT program. Re boot the PC.

Find and delete the following file, if found:

    C:\WINDOWS\mserv.exe...file

    Next.......

    Download CCleaner from :-

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ (click the download tab)

doubleclick the ccsetup.exe file and install the program...

At the Cclean setup screen &Install opitions Uncheck the Add Ccleaner Yahoo ! Tool bar unless you want it

After installing, go to Start > programs > CCleaner > Options > Advanced > UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

Make sure the "windows" tab is selected

    Under "internet explorer" tick...

    Temporary internet files
    Cookies* > see Note below
    History
    Recently typed URL's
(leave this unticked if you DON'T want to clear the drop down list in the address window of IE)
    Delete index.dat files
    Last download location
    Autocomplete form history

under "Windows explorer" these are optional, but you can safely tick them all if you wish, they are only "most recently used lists"

    Other explorer MRU's
(leave this unticked if you DON'T want to clear lists such as the start\run list)

    under "System"

    Tick ALL these ...

    under "Advanced"

no need to tick any of these (but you can if you want, and realise what they do)

    Applications tab...

These will mostly clean out old log files for these applications...

    Clean:- (if you use them)

Firefox/Mozilla (optional - leave the cookies - see note)
    Opera
    Sun Java
    ZoneAlarm

    ...
Personally I clean everything in the applications tab... but you tick what you want...

Note: *If there are any cookies you want to keep (if you remove the cookie for a site you require a password for, you will need to re-enter your passward when you next visit that site) ... click options > cookies > then keep the cookies you want.

click "analyse" if you want to see a list of what is going to be removed, before it is removed.

    Or

click "run cleaner" to let it get on with it's work... clicking this will result in the following pop-up

"This process will permanently delete files from your system. Are you sure you wish to proceed?"

    click OK.

    Next........

    Download Superantispyware.

    http://www.superantispyware.com/

Once downloaded and installed update the definitions
and then run a full system scan quarantine what it finds!

    * Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)

    http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html

    * Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
    * Click the Scanning Control tab.
    * Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    o Close browsers before scanning.
    o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    * Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
    * Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    * On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    * On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
    * Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    * After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
    * Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
    * A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
    * If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
    * To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
o Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
    * Click Close to exit the program.

    Need to see :

    SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log
    New HJT log.

    Hi

In order to fix this entry :-

    O23 - Service: mserv.exe (anem) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\mserv.exe (file missing)

You will probably have to stop spybots teatimer first (as it is monitoring & protecting entries from being deleted from the registry ... malware ones as well as legit ones)

As BG said ... "The c:\windows\system32\bits\qmgr.dll problem is what may be causing the problem with windows updates.
    "

qmgr.dll is a process associated with Background Intelligent Transfer Service from Microsoft Corporation. This file is part of Microsoft® Windows® Operating ...

ALSO ... this error from windows update could be part of the same problem ... 0x80072EE2

    1. check that the

    Go to > Start > Run > type services.msc > click OK

when the services applett opens ... scroll down to Background Intelligent Transfer Service

    Is it started ?
is it set to Manual, Automatic or disabled ?

If you are not in the habit of downloading updates automatically (which I don't) then you do not need the service running, as you can download the updates manually using IE ...

    ---
I don't know why ActiveScan should Hang on this file ...\bits\qmgr.dll unless the file is corrupt ...

Please go to the file C:\windows\system32\bits\qmgr.dll

Right click the file > properties > what is the file size ?

Also ... version tab > what is the file version ?

    ---
As for not being able to logon to secure sites ...

There are many reasons why you may not be able to enter a secure site.....this is what I have....

please check them ALL - if you skip any of them, that just may be the one causing your problem

    1. At the top of the page - click help - about internet explorer

    is your cipher-strength "128-bit" ?
    --------------------------------------------------
    2. Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security section, and then select the Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 options.
    Click OK.
    -------------------------------------------------
    3. Have you deleted your temporary internet files since this problem started - if not, do it now
    -----
    4. Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?] Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off

    5. Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled] Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"

    6. Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer" or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

    7. HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

    8. Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

    9. Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

    10. WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

    11. Make sure the following entry is not corrupt: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings] "User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"

    12. Check the date and time on your computer ...if it's wrong, cookies will not be accepted and you will not be able to log in to some sites.

    13. Check Norton (if you have it) - disable or reinstall ( I see you have Norton/Symantec ) ... this trojan which you had C:\WINDOWS\mserv.exe ... disables anti-virus programs ... it may well have corrupted yours ...

    Default ActiveScan Hangs on ...\bits\qmgr.dll

    Hi,

I am currently disconnected from the network.

    1. I stopped Teatimer (per http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/disable.html) then ran & "Fix Checked" HJT to no avail. Then I restarted (w/ Teatimer still off) and ran and "Fix Checked" HJT again and the following continues to be there:

    O23 - Service: mserv.exe (anem) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\mserv.exe (file missing)

    2. I then checked BITS from the "services.msc". BITS is set to Manual and status is blank. I can start and stop the services. I have turned it back off.

    3. When i right click on :\windows\system32\bits\qmgr.dll, my PC hangs and I have to reboot via the reset button.

    4. WRT IE settings & secure site access, I will work on those tomorrow.

I hope the above provide some clues as to next steps.

    Thanks for your persistence,

    Tony

    Hi

    RE: O23 - Service: mserv.exe (anem) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\mserv.exe (file missing)

go to Start > Run and type Services.msc > click OK

Scroll down and find the service called mserv.exe

    double-click on it

    click the Stop button

change the Startup Type to Disabled

click Apply and then Ok and close any open windows

    run hijackthis...

    click "Open Misc Tools Section"

    click "delete an NT service"

    enter anem

    click OK

    close hijackthis

    reboot

check the hijackthis log, it should now be gone ...

    Let's see if re-registering the qmgr.dll helps ...

go to Start > Run and type REGSVR32 qmgr.dll > click OK

    -
When i right click on :\windows\system32\bits\qmgr.dll, my PC hangs and I have to reboot via the reset button.
Right clicking the file should just bring up the context menu ...

Can you right click other dll's without your computer freezing ?

maybe you have a rogue context menu handler ...

    Hi,

I was able to disable mserv.exe and after rebooting it appears to be gone. The HJT log follows. I was also able to re-register qmgr.dll via REGSVR32. The size is 352kb and the version is 6.6.2600.1569.

    WRT the other:
    - Housecall still seems to hang
    - Was able to get Defender and no issues detected. But still cannot get Windows updates (error is the same - 0x080072ee2)
    - AVG detects no issues
    - Still cannot log into secure web sites. Since I use Firefox, instead of the IE settings could you provide the Firefox settings?

    Looking at the logs....

I was serious when I said you can NOT run two anti virus programs, period.

    Why is AVG back again?

Running two at the same time will cause conflicts and offer less protection than just one. It can also cause false "positive" in other programs.

My choice would be to dump Norton and keep AVG. If you want to rid yourself of the resource hungry , dollar sucking, infective Norton, let us know. There is a program that should remove all traces of it.
