First ... your log is clean ...

wuauclt.exe is used for Automatic updates ... have you tried to update manually ?

    Tools > Windows Update ?

There could be over a hundred reasons why this is not working ... we need the exact error message in order to troubleshoot it.

Were has this PC been in the last few years? Have you been using it?

Hard to tell what all is wrong, since it doesn't even have SP1 for XP/IE installed.

I reformatted it a couple times. The last time I reformatted it was about 1 year ago and from then I have never been able to perform windows update. how do I go about getting the error log. I've had this computer for 5 years now and I know it will be considered ice age material. I want to upgrade but its my business computer and it gets the job done, some times, i guess.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

In order to access Automatic Updates the following services need to be set to 'automatic' and must be started:

    Automatic Updates
    Background Intelligent Transfer Service
    Cryptographic Services

I hope this was helpful to you in your troubleshooting process. If not, you should still consider yourself lucky based on the length of most of my replies.

Please continue to keep the community abreast of the situation including its resolution.

My edit button seems to be A.W.O.L. so I'm just going to have to double post as I realise I may have made a mistake with my previous post.

If said machine is actually a company's machine, please disregard my previous post, do not pass go, do not collect $200 dollars, and instead take the machine in question straight to the company's IT department.

For many good reasons the volunteers here do not involve themselves in issues regarding machines that are the responsibility of a company's IT dept.

It is my fault for mis-reading your follow-up response and for that I apologise.

I also offer my most sincere apology to the community for any undue stress my previous post may have or might lead to.

Though there is no 'I' in team, I still consider my previous post to be my sole responsibility for the possible mis-representation of Help2Go that it may, in fact, be.

I run a home business. I'm the owner and we donít have an IT department. I try to fix my computer before wasting someoneís time. It could be an easy fix and the time saved is worth me possibly pressing the wrong button. If all fails, reformatting works like a charm.

53V3N ... you're not the only one missing things here ... however flyboy61881 doesn't say this is a company's machine, just that he uses it for business, & I think the fact that he has reformatted it several times in the 5 years he has had it, would reflect that it is his own computer, & he is responsible for it ... so no need to worry about anything you said... by the way, only moderators & spyware fighters can use the edit button in this forum.

flyboy61881 ... I missed what BG pointed out ..."You don't even have SP1 for XP/IE installed"

You cannot get updates from Windows update unless you have SP2 installed ...
You should not attempt to install SP2 unless you have SP1a installed first ...

You may want to try that ...

    Go here to download SP1a

    flyboy61881 - didn't see your last post ...

Try to install SP1a first ... if that's successful try SP2 .... then updates ...

I'm trying to download windows updates and every time I'm getting a wuauclt.exe error.
It was the EXACT wording of the error you mentioned above, that I wanted you to post ...

    Here is the exact wording:

wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I will try downloading the SP1.
