I use this feature, but unfortunatly my university doesn't which can get kind of confusing. I also have it set up so any new tab open with my home page (google.co.uk) and that when you type an address in the address bar it opens it in a new tab. I found it could get quite annoying if I typed an address in without thinking and I lost where I was and then had to mess about with new tabs anyway.

I use the extensions click2tab, and tabbrowser. They both work fine, there is another tab extension I tried but I found it quite counterintuitive to use and so went back to those two, things like new tabe opening just to the right of the existing tab, its handy in principle but if you have 10 tabs open the order can change so much you don't know where you're looking for what you want. I think that was called tabmixer, but personally I wouldn't reccomend it although it is very popular I think.
